“Crowning the Donnison: A Roof for the Next Generation”
Our building has sheltered, educated and supported generations — now it needs YOUR HELP! After 25 years of years of weather, wear and tear our roof has reached the end of its life. Leaks, heat loss, and structural strain now threaten the activities, events, and heritage work that so many people rely on.
We are launching our “Crown the Donnison” campaign to secure the funds needed for a full roof replacement. This is essential work that will protect the building, safeguard our collections and activities, and ensure we can continue welcoming schools, volunteers, families, and community groups for years to come.
Every contribution — large or small — brings us one step closer to a safe, warm, and sustainable home for our community.
About The Donnison School Heritage & Education Centre
The Donnison School Heritage & Education Centre is a treasured community asset in Sunderland’s East End. Once an 18th-century charity school for girls, restored 18 years ago, it now thrives as a living heritage and community space where history, learning, and community come together.
With the dedication of community volunteers, we provide:
Education programmes that inspire children and adults to connect with Sunderland’s past.
A unique walled garden, lovingly preserved as a green space for wellbeing, learning, and enjoyment.
Guided tours of the school and surrounding area, bringing local history to life.
Exhibitions, events, and community gatherings that celebrate Sunderland’s culture and creativity.
Heritage lectures and talks that deepen understanding of the city’s story and identity. Opportunities to engage through a raft of activities that helps to reduce isolation and loneliness.
More than a heritage site, the Donnison School is a hub for community connection. It is a place where young and old come together to learn, share, and celebrate Sunderland’s cultural story and engage meaningfully as volunteers. By preserving the past, we are also building pride, resilience, and opportunity for the future.
Your support helps us:
• Keep this historic building open and accessible to all.
• Create opportunities for volunteering, skills development, and intergenerational learning.
• Ensure Sunderland’s heritage is not only preserved but actively enjoyed by the whole community.
Together, we can safeguard this vital part of the city’s history while making it a vibrant, inclusive space for today and tomorrow.
